For most of the past decade, a McLean weekend meant driving somewhere else for dinner. Tysons had the restaurants. McLean had the parking lot outside them. That is quietly changing, and the change is concentrated inside a handful of blocks you already drive through every day.
The most useful way to see it is to trace the summer along three lines: a stretch of Old Dominion Drive that has picked up three new tenants in twelve months, a Friday-morning market at Lewinsville that has added producers you have not tasted before, and a set of rooftop and river destinations that reward being local enough to go on a whim.
Old Dominion Drive is finally acting like a main street
The clearest signal is a single half-mile of road. Three notable food openings, all on Old Dominion, all within a short walk of each other.
At the north end, Town is a new American neighborhood bistro at 6671 Old Dominion Drive that opened in early November 2025 in the corner space at Lowell Avenue. The context matters. Café Oggi, a McLean institution that operated for more than 30 years, closed in early 2022, leaving a void on Old Dominion Drive that sat quiet for years. The rebuild was substantial: a new dining layout, a 20-seat bar, updated interiors, and a large outdoor patio that seats about 35, with roughly 100 seats inside.
South of there, in Chesterbrook Shopping Center, the pace picked up over the winter and spring.

Sweetgreen officially opened its Chesterbrook location on Tuesday, Dec. 2, after a delay from its originally planned Nov. 11 date. The 2,571-square-foot storefront was previously a BB&T Bank, and it is the chain's 13th Northern Virginia location. Next door, Surfside Taco Stand is making its first Virginia move at 6218 Old Dominion Drive and has filed for a liquor license with the Virginia ABC Board, indicating an opening in the not-too-distant future. If you have eaten at Surfside in Dupont, Tenleytown, or The Wharf, the McLean version will look familiar: tacos, quesadillas, and burritos named after coastal towns like Cozumel and Malibu, with frozen and tropical cocktails on tap beneath a ceiling lined with vintage surfboards.
Chesterbrook itself has been reworking around the new tenants. The 50-plus-year-old center is in the middle of a phased renovation that includes refreshed storefronts, upgraded landscaping with indigenous plants, decorative lighting, widened sidewalks, and outdoor amenity spaces. Whether you love that or find it fussy, the practical effect is more places to linger outside after dinner.
Friday morning at Lewinsville is not the market you remember
If you have not stopped by the McLean Farmers Market in a couple of seasons, the vendor mix has shifted. The 2026 season runs every Friday through Oct. 30 at Lewinsville Park, 1659 Chain Bridge Road, from 8 a.m. to noon. Two additions are worth planning the morning around.
Two new vendors have set up tables at the McLean Farmers Market this season: Siesta Gozleme, which specializes in traditional Turkish and Kurdish cuisine, and Sicilian Mom, which sells handcrafted Sicilian arancini stuffed rice balls made entirely from scratch.
A few operational details are useful if you are shopping seriously and not just wandering:
- The market is producer-only, and Park Authority staff visited every participating farm to verify that vendors grow the items they sell.
- Many small family farms use sustainable practices without pursuing organic certification because of the record-keeping it requires, so ask vendors directly rather than reading labels.
- For residents using SNAP EBT benefits, the Park Authority matches up to $40 in benefits weekly, with plans to expand the service.
- Live music starts after 9 a.m. so there is a music-free shopping hour first, and musicians are approved for family-friendly content and busk for tips.
One planning note that catches people off guard: the market is closed on May 15 for McLean Day, and the schedule reshuffles around it. If you had a Friday habit and hit a locked gate this spring, that is why.
When you want out of the neighborhood without actually leaving
The best McLean weekend move is still the one that requires the least planning. Two hikes and one rooftop cover most of what an out-of-town guest wants to see, and all three are close enough to be a spontaneous decision after brunch.
Great Falls Park. More than 800 acres of National Park Service land on the Potomac where the river drops 76 feet through cascades into Mather Gorge, with the 1.5-mile River Trail running along the edge of the gorge with cliff-edge views. The Patowmack Canal Trail traces the ruins of George Washington's canal infrastructure, and an entrance fee applies per vehicle with America the Beautiful annual passes accepted. If you drive a lot for work, the annual pass pays for itself by August.
Scott's Run. A Fairfax County preserve off Georgetown Pike where trails descend through forested ravines to a waterfall on Scott's Run creek before reaching a rocky Potomac beach, roughly 1.5 miles round trip from the Georgetown Pike trailhead with steep, rugged sections. It is shorter than Great Falls and gets more crowded on Saturday mornings for that reason. Park early or go after 3 p.m.
The Perch at Capital One Center. An 11-story rooftop park in Tysons with the Starr Hill Biergarten serving craft beer and food with open-air sunset views, Perch Putt mini-golf built into the rooftop landscape, and an amphitheater hosting live music and community events through spring, summer, and fall. The park itself is free; food and beverage charges apply. It is the closest thing McLean has to a downtown rooftop scene, and it is a five-minute drive from most of Chesterbrook.
What to put on the calendar before fall arrives
Two fall dates are worth locking in now, because both sell out or fill parking in ways that punish last-minute planning.
The McLean Community Players present "1776" on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at 7:30 p.m., with standard tickets $25, senior tickets $20, and MCC district residents $18. The run time is approximately three hours, so plan dinner beforehand rather than after.
McLean Artfest, formerly MPAartfest, continues its annual tradition at McLean Central Park, now produced by the McLean Community Center in partnership with McLean Project for the Arts, as a juried festival showcasing over 30 local and regional visual artists from throughout the Mid-Atlantic. It anchors the shift from summer to fall in the same way McLean Day anchors the start of it. A quieter option in between: the Alden Theatre is a 400-seat professional performance venue at the McLean Community Center on Laughlin Avenue that programs theater, classical music, modern dance, and comedy at a level that competes with D.C. venues in a more intimate, neighborhood setting. It is the answer when you want a Tuesday-night plan that does not involve driving into the District.
The through line
Read the summer as a single movement rather than a checklist and something clarifies. For decades McLean's culinary reputation was defined largely by its proximity to Tysons rather than by its own restaurant landscape, and Town's opening is part of a growing effort to give McLean a culinary identity of its own. The Sweetgreen and Surfside additions extend the same thesis at a different price point. The farmers market has quietly been building the same case for years by putting producers, not resellers, in front of you every Friday.
